The Luminos Fund is delighted to share the publication of a new peer-reviewed journal article in Education Economics, highlighting the results of an IDinsight randomized controlled trial (RCT) of our Liberia program.
The journal article, “Improving learning outcomes for out-of-school children: evidence from a randomized evaluation of an accelerated learning program in Liberia,” highlights the dramatic learning gains that Luminos students achieved during our 10-month accelerated learning program.
During the 2022-23 school year in Liberia, Luminos students read four times more words per minute (WPM) and showed a two-times increase in addition and numeracy skills by the end of our one-year program, compared to the control group.
According to the article, “The Luminos Program had large, positive, and statistically significant effects after ten months on all assessed reading and numeracy skills… Effects were similar in size for girls vs boys, younger vs older children, children who were previously enrolled in school vs dropouts, and children who started with lower baseline learning levels vs higher baseline learning levels.”

This study makes a vital contribution to the limited body of research on catch-up education programs, which are critical for helping out-of-school children rapidly build foundational literacy and numeracy skills, rejoin government schools, and prepare for lifelong learning. With few rigorous evaluations in this space, these IDinsight findings offer valuable insights into addressing the global learning crisis and provide evidence-based strategies to support the most vulnerable out-of-school children.
