10 Years of Unlocking the Light of Learning in Every Child

Ten years ago, Luminos set out to address the question: what happens to the children schools leave behind? Not just the children who are struggling in the classroom—but those who are shut out of education entirely.
Children displaced by conflict or kept home by poverty. In many communities where Luminos works, that is not the exception. It’s the norm.

Over the past decade, Luminos classrooms have shown that children in low-resourced settings can learn far faster than anyone thought possible. More than 30 independent, external evaluations confirm that in classrooms using the Luminos Method, children progress from not recognizing letters to reading short stories within a single year. They achieve transformative learning gains, read as much as nine times faster than their peers, and move forward into government schools with confidence. This year alone, 103,523 children learned to read, write, and do math—our biggest annual reach to date.

When I think back to where we started, what strikes me most is not how far we have come, but how consistent our belief has been: every child, given the right conditions, can learn. And joy and rigor belong together in a classroom.

The “Show” Years: Unlocking the Light of Learning in Every Child
Before we could change education systems, we had to prove a model worth scaling.
In the early years, that meant expanding our direct delivery model—in Ethiopia, then Liberia, then Ghana—and asking the same question in every new context: how do we ensure meaningful impact on children’s learning? Every country brought different languages, different resources, different histories of educational exclusion. The Luminos Method had to hold up across all of them.
It did. But replicating results across three countries takes more than a strong framework and materials.
From the beginning, frontline community-based organizations were fundamental to our approach. These partners know the communities, speak the languages, and understand what it takes to reach children at the margins. About two-thirds of the Luminos model is the same everywhere we work, but the other third is developed at the country level, together with our local partners.
Every year, in every classroom, we collect data, ask hard questions, and adapt. That willingness to keep iterating—even when something is already working—is what allowed the model to deliver transformative impact across such different settings.

Importantly, we never scale a country program until we have evidence in context of transformational learning gains.
Children who could not recognize letters of the alphabet were reading short stories within a single school year. They were not just catching up to their peers in government schools. They were outperforming them.
The results of the IDinsight randomized controlled trial (RCT) in Liberia were a key milestone. The study confirmed that, in one year, a Luminos student learns 90% of what the average Liberian will ever learn in school,[1] all in joyful classrooms. Luminos is the only foundational learning program proven to achieve this level of impact while remaining highly cost-effective.

The “Share” Years: Becoming a Movement
Showing that the Luminos Method works is only part of our journey. By the time our “Share” years took shape, we had robust evidence, hard-won lessons from our classrooms across three countries, and a growing conviction that keeping that knowledge inside our own organization would be a failure of a different kind.
We share our approach widely so everyone can access, adapt, and build on what works.
A hallmark achievement of that decision was the publication of the Luminos Method—a practical, evidence-based guide to everything we learned about creating joyful, inclusive, and empowering learning experiences for the world’s most vulnerable children. To date, governments, education experts, and practitioners in 33 countries across six continents have received the Luminos Method book.
Shortly after, we launched the Luminos Method Learning Lab as a space for African-led organizations to engage directly with the Luminos approach through workshops, classroom visits, and hands-on adaptation to their own contexts.

The Luminos Method is an evidence-based approach to transforming education for the world’s most vulnerable children. Grounded in a decade of experience, it outlines nine core elements that together create joyful, inclusive, and empowering learning experiences.
Additionally, our classroom materials—including Teachers’ Guides, Student Books, Decodable Readers, and Read Aloud stories—are freely available on our website. Because we believe great tools should be in as many hands as possible.
These milestones show that Luminos isn’t just building impactful foundational learning programs; we are building a movement.
The “Shift” Years: Scaling the Mission
At a certain point, every impactful program must ask: how do we ensure not only deep impact, but lasting impact?
Across each country where we work, Luminos partners closely with government. Through these partnerships, we strengthen government schools to teach all children effectively—so all children can flourish and continue their education with confidence. Luminos formalizes these partnerships through agreements that signal governments’ commitment to embedding the Luminos Method into their systems.
Of all these partnerships, Ethiopia best captures what the shift has made possible.

Ethiopia is home to our oldest and deepest government partnership.
Since 2018, the Ethiopian Ministry of Education has adopted the Luminos Method as a national strategy for supporting out-of-school children, resulting in accelerated learning programs in 13 of Ethiopia’s 14 regions and reaching 233,915 children to date.
More recently, at the request of regional education leaders, Luminos introduced a structured pedagogy model into government primary schools—detailed lesson plans, teacher training, and ongoing coaching that combine evidence-based literacy and numeracy instruction with joyful, student-centered learning.
The results have been striking: students in these classrooms achieve reading scores four times higher than peers in conventional Grade 2 classrooms. Teachers gain new skills and confidence in their roles, and experience joy and pride in their students’ progress.
Our work with governments in Liberia, Ghana, and The Gambia tells a similar story—governments actively building capacity to deliver joyful, effective learning to thousands more marginalized children each year.
Celebrating a Decade of Impact
This year, the Luminos Fund marks its 10-year anniversary. As we celebrate this milestone, we also celebrate the nearly half a million children whose educational trajectories have been permanently changed. None of it would have been possible without our donors, supporters, teachers, and partners who believed in this mission from the start.
Ten years ago, impact meant a child who was out of school for many years—or never attended school—learning to read or write for the first time. It still does. But the definition has expanded in many ways.
It also means a teacher in rural Ethiopia discovering, perhaps for the first time, that her students are capable of far more than the system led her to expect—and that she is too. It means a government official who visits a Luminos classroom, sees what joyful learning looks like, and starts asking harder questions about what is happening in conventional classrooms. It means practical, classroom-ready tools, available freely on our website being adapted for children beyond Luminos classrooms.
For everyone at Luminos, joy is not a nice-to-have. It is at the center of everything we do. A child who learns in a classroom where they feel safe, seen, and capable does not just learn faster; they build a love for learning that can last for years.
